Bloox vs the alternatives — an honest comparison

Side-by-side with Audible, BookPlayer, Prologue, Bound, AudioBooth, and the Audiobookshelf ecosystem. Where each app wins, where each loses, and which one fits your library.

The short version: different apps solve different problems. Bloox is a free iOS player for audiobook files you already own (M4B, MP3) with transcript-aware features no other player has: Book Chat beta, live transcription, character identification, and recap summaries. It is not the best choice for everyone, and this page is honest about who should pick something else.

If you mostly buy from Audible and want the simplest possible path: stay in the Audible app. If you self-host with Audiobookshelf and need real-time progress sync back to the server: use ShelfPlayer or Plappa. If you want to import books into a private local library and get Bloox’s AI listening tools, Bloox is probably worth a try.

Where Bloox loses (yes, this is on the comparison page)

App-by-app, in plain English

Audible

Subscription

Amazon’s store + player. Largest catalog of professionally narrated audiobooks, great CarPlay, ubiquitous on every device. Files stay within the Audible app.

Pick if: you mostly buy new releases and want the easiest possible flow. Skip if: you want Bloox’s transcript-aware features or a local file-based library.

BookPlayer

Free / Open source

Free, GPL-licensed iOS player for your own files. Mature, reliable, minimalist UI. No AI features, no transcription, no character help.

Pick if: you want the simplest free player and don’t care about AI features. Skip if: you want transcription or recap summaries.

Prologue

Paid one-time

Polished iOS player for your own files, with great CarPlay and a refined Now Playing experience. One-time purchase, no subscription, no AI.

Pick if: you want the most polished “just plays your files” experience and don’t need AI. Skip if: you want it free or want transcription.

Bound

Subscription / IAP

Modern iOS player with cross-device sync, sleep timer, and many quality-of-life features. Some functionality gated behind IAP or a small subscription.

Pick if: you want sync across multiple iOS devices without running a server. Skip if: you want completely free or AI features.

AudioBooth

Free / Pro

Active iOS player handling both audiobooks and eBooks with a free tier and a paid pro tier. Developer is responsive on Reddit and ships features fast.

Pick if: you want one app for both audiobooks and eBooks. Skip if: you want a focused audiobook-only experience with AI.

ShelfPlayer / Plappa

Free / Open source

iOS clients for the self-hosted Audiobookshelf ecosystem. Tight integration: streaming, downloads, real-time progress sync to the server, multi-user.

Pick if: you self-host Audiobookshelf and want native server sync. Skip if: you don’t run a server or want Book Chat, transcription, and recap tools the ABS clients don’t offer.

Pick the right app for your library

Honest recommendations based on how you store and listen.

I buy from Audible and want zero hassle

Stay in the Audible app. It is still the path of least resistance for the Amazon ecosystem: no importing, no waiting, nothing extra to think about.

Pick: Audible

I buy from Audible but want to own my files and try AI features

Use Bloox’s Import from Audible flow for a selected book: choose the book and add it to your library. For bulk desktop exports, Libation is still excellent. Either way, the imported book can use Book Chat, transcription, character lists, bookmarks, and recaps.

Pick: Bloox or Bloox + Libation

I run an Audiobookshelf server at home and want native sync

Use ShelfPlayer or Plappa. They speak the Audiobookshelf API directly for progress, library state, downloads, and multi-user server workflows. Bloox can import from Audiobookshelf, but it does not yet sync listening progress back to the server.

Pick: ShelfPlayer or Plappa

I run Audiobookshelf and also want AI transcription

Import selected Audiobookshelf books into Bloox when you want Book Chat, live transcript, characters, or a recap. Use ShelfPlayer/Plappa for the books where server progress sync matters more than the AI layer.

Pick: ShelfPlayer + Bloox as a companion

I have a folder of MP3s I ripped from CDs years ago

Drop them in iCloud or Google Drive and import to any of the file-based players. Bloox handles 10+ filename patterns and warns about gaps before they become playback surprises — useful for messy old CD rips. BookPlayer and Prologue are equally good choices for the playback itself.

Pick: Bloox, BookPlayer, or Prologue

I listen mostly before bed and fall asleep often

The recap and sleep timer combination is exactly why I built Bloox. Wake up, tap “What Did I Miss?”, get a short catch-up, and continue listening. If one small plot point is still fuzzy, ask Book Chat instead of rewinding blindly.

Pick: Bloox

I’m on iOS 18 or older and can’t upgrade

Bloox’s AI features need iOS 26 + Apple Intelligence-capable hardware. On older devices, BookPlayer or Prologue will give you a solid playback experience without the AI layer.

Pick: BookPlayer or Prologue

I’m on Android

Bloox is iOS only. On Android, Smart AudioBook Player and Voice Audiobook Player are the most-recommended free players for your own files. For Audiobookshelf users, the official Audiobookshelf Android app is the obvious pick.

Pick: Smart AudioBook Player, Voice, or Audiobookshelf for Android
